Astrological influences
of the outer planets in the 20th century

Pluto upheavals - A generation confronts the crisis of it's time and history is transformed by the experience.

Pluto in Sagittarius (1995- )- Truth and meaning are under attack as the availability of information overwhelms our ability to assimilate it. Hypocrisy, double standards, and a general emptiness in the progress we have come to expect leaves us devoid of higher purpose. Should civilization be more than an elaborate distribution network for consumer objects?

Pluto in Scorpio (1983-1995) - AIDS reverses the sexual revolution and transforms medicine in the process. Investment consciousness deepens with the middle class entering into 401k plans, IRA's, and mutual fund investments. Crime and punishment are magnified as unprecidented numbers are imprisoned and prison culture shapes the mainstream. Tatoo/body piercing is popular. Pluto is in it's ruling sign, signifying a return to unhampered rulership by the power elite.

Pluto in Libra (1971-1984)- Divorce rates skyrocket and gender issues are brought into the forefront. The ERA, affirmative action, labor unions, and the aftermath of the social changes of the 60's usher in our modern litigious culture where issues of fairness and equality give rise to political organizations.

Pluto in Virgo (1957-1972)- Counter Culture criticizes the established order, music is the catalyst for personal development and social change. Miniturization makes amplified music practical and chemical refining provides birth control and mind change drugs. Youth culture expands adolescence to it's modern extent. The rare conjunction with Uranus produced revolutionary power and a reaction against the ethos of the Leo period bringing the Pluto influence into sharp decline.

Pluto in Leo (1937-1957)- World War II develops in response to Authoritarian dictatorships as patriotic fervor inflames patriotic sensibilities. Hitler's propaganda machine foreshadows the modern cult of personality which is imitated in politics, business, and entertainment ever since. This is also the height of the Pluto cycle when power struggles are played out with unprecidented violence and scale.

Pluto in Cancer (1912-1938)- Urbanization transforms the home into the modern form we still know today. For the first time, families are taken out of houses and compressed into highly dense neighborhoods. Children are sent off to school and parents begin to work outside the home. The new family dynamic makes possible the future emancipation of women and the young.

Neptune zeitgeist - The beauty and spirit of time. What is glamorous and idealized.

Neptune in Aquarius (1998-)- From the dead of our spiritual winter, a purple hue radiates alien and quirky ecclecticism. Taking the lead from the computer industry, technical jargon invades every form of communication. The sterile banality of econorationalism gives way to a slightly playful tweaking of taboos and forces a reluctant laissez-faire liberality in the arts and society.

Neptune in Capricorn (1984-1998)- Money, status, and power are sought after in basic black. Conservative themes run throughout, emphasis on ruthless competition and large organizations. The desire for respect and control drives urban gangs and corporate power players alike while drug consumption turns to crack, methamphetamine and performance enhancing steroids.

Neptune in Sagittarius (1970-1984)- Positive thinking, cults, EST, fitness gurus are highlighted as the desire to stay high outpaces other concerns. In this period aspirations consolidate into goals and the philosophy of excess is gradually focused into the philosophy of success that will dominate the next era.

Neptune in Scorpio (1955-1970)- Sex, Drugs, & Rock n' Roll take center stage as humanity is inspired by the challenge of exploring itself. Pyschology, drugs, and eastern spirituality open new windows into the mystical and social changes unleash powerful and violent passions. The culture of rebellion is born with greasers and the beat generation but by cycle's end becomes an androgynous hippie aesthetic.

Neptune in Libra (1942-1957)- Marriage and family are emphasized and the esthetic of bland perfection evens out the periods between wars. Conformity and complacency mask the brutal underpinnings of this golden era of the military-industrial complex. An us vs. them consciousness serves the nation well from World War II to the Cold War.

Neptune in Virgo (1928-1943)- From the stock market crash to the height of the war effort, effeciency and duty was the order of the day. Poverty and rationing created a culture of scarcity which neatly separated the lavish excess of the Leo period from the satisfied prosperity of the Libra era.

Neptune in Leo (1914-1929)- From the War to end all Wars to the Roaring 20's. Not only does this period lend a Neptunian glow to the traditional Leo arenas of stage and state but also marks the highest intensity of the Neptune influence in the cycle. Art Noveau, Art Deco, jazz, radio, motion pictures and alcohol drive this first dionysian period of the modern age. Dream analysis and spiritualism are also in vogue as electricity bathes the new world in an unearthly light.

Neptune in Cancer (1901-1916)- Nervous Cancer makes it's influence felt with new fears. Immigration and urbanization gives rise to a clannish culture of mutual suspicion in America while Europe enjoys a brief period of tranquility before the first World War.
